Home Mining Stays Viable as Bitcoin Network Reaches Zettahash Milestone
Home Bitcoin mining is still a viable option in 2026, despite the network's high hashrate. The current difficulty of 127.45T and a total network hashrate hovering just under one zettahash per second make it challenging for solo hobbyists to compete.
The key to profitable home mining lies in cheap power, the right ASIC miner, and a clear understanding of the math involved. A single Antminer S21 can be profitable if plugged into a 6-cent power source, but this changes dramatically when using a 22-cent residential rate.
Bitcoin's network has crossed the zettahash milestone, with estimates ranging from 945.79 EH/s to over 1,001 EH/s. This scale is the backdrop against which individual home rigs are judged, and most setups run one to three ASICs in an attempt to achieve modest, compounding payouts.
There's also a decentralization argument in favor of home mining, as it adds a small counterweight to the concentration of hashrate in large hosting facilities and dominant pools. However, this won't significantly impact Foundry USA's market share.
