HSBC Unveils 2025 Restructuring Plan, Exits M&A and ECM, Launches Stablecoin
HSBC Holdings PLC, a leading global banking and financial services organization, has announced a major restructuring plan for 2025. The plan, which aims to reshape the company's franchise, involves exiting most M&A (mergers and acquisitions) advisory and ECM (equity capital markets) businesses in the US, UK, and Europe. However, the company will continue to operate its financing units, including debt capital markets, leveraged finance, and infrastructure finance.
The restructuring plan also includes the launch of HSBC RedCoin, a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, which marks the bank's entry into the digital payments market. This move is seen as a strategic step to expand the company's presence in the rapidly growing fintech sector.
Additionally, HSBC has repurchased 871,200 shares on September 25 for HK$136.6 million, as per a HKEX filing. This move is part of the company's efforts to boost its share price and demonstrate its commitment to its shareholders.
The company has also appointed Paras Jain as its global head of TMT (technology, media, and telecommunications) investment banking in New York. Jain is expected to start in November and will focus on expanding the company's TMT M&A, financing, and AI infrastructure deals.
HSBC has also launched hedged Bitcoin products in GBP and EUR, in partnership with HANetf. These products are designed to provide institutional investors with a more accessible and secure way to invest in Bitcoin.
