Human Nature Trumps Fundamentals in Crypto Market
Investors are often driven by the desire for life-changing wealth rather than simply maximizing returns. This is according to Meir Statman, a behavioral finance pioneer and professor of finance at Santa Clara University. He notes that investments can change quickly, but human nature and aspirations remain constant.
Crypto cycles have historically been about chasing the next hot narrative, whether it's DeFi, meme coins or decentralized compute. This behavior is not unique to digital assets, but rather a common trait in an industry that prizes memes over sustainable business models.
A MarketWise study compared hypothetical $10,000 investments across cryptocurrencies, stocks, exchange-traded funds and collectibles between January 2021 and April 2026. The results showed that a sealed Pokémon card box outperformed Bitcoin, while a pair of limited-edition sneakers nearly matched Dogecoin's returns.
Statman argues that people often invest for transformative goals, such as buying a house or becoming financially independent. This is reflected in the 'not-poor' and 'be-rich' layers of wealth management, where concentrated investments are not necessarily irrational.
