IBM Study Uncovers Widening Gap Between Employee AI Skills and CHRO Priorities

IBM's recent study highlights a significant gap between employee AI skills and CHRO workforce priorities. The research, which surveyed 1,500 chief human resources officers and 8,800 full-time employees worldwide, found that about 71% of CHROs ranked AI oversight skills as essential for the workforce, but only 29% of employees agreed.

The study also revealed that 60% of employees expressed concerns that increased AI use could weaken some workplace skills, with critical thinking being the most frequently cited skill at risk. Meanwhile, 57% of CHROs identified critical thinking and problem framing as important capabilities alongside human judgment.

IBM found that clearer human oversight in workflows can improve quality and reduce risks, with organizations that clearly divide tasks between employees and automated systems reporting an 18% reduction in risk and a 20% improvement in quality. However, the study also highlighted challenges for HR departments in adopting AI, including additional workloads linked to validation, corrections, context, and exception management.
