Igloo Inc. Shuts Down Abstract Chain After Losing Tens of Millions
Igloo Inc. has announced the shutdown of its Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, Abstract, effective December 15, 2026. The decision comes after the company lost tens of millions of dollars funding the project for roughly two years. Igloo CEO Luca Netz stated that despite efforts to build a scalable consumer-focused blockchain, Abstract failed to achieve a sustainable business model. The company will now redirect its resources toward Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFTs, and the PENGU ecosystem.
Abstract attracted over 400,000 users and processed more than 300 million transactions, with 144 applications deployed on the network. However, structural issues such as a restricted DeFi ecosystem, thin onchain liquidity, limited institutional participation, and high costs led to its closure. Before the shutdown announcement, approximately $48 million in assets remained on the chain, though this figure has since decreased to around $42 million as users migrate their funds.
Users must move their assets off Abstract before the December 15 deadline to avoid losing access. The official Migration Hub and Native Bridge are available for this purpose, though the latter has a three-hour delay. Igloo has ruled out launching an Abstract token or ICO, citing insufficient demand to justify such a move. The shutdown follows similar closures of other Ethereum Layer 2 projects, such as Blast, which also cited economic sustainability as a major challenge.
