Illinois Delays Crypto Tax Implementation Until 2027
The state of Illinois has agreed to postpone the implementation of its digital asset tax by six months following a lawsuit filed by crypto advocacy organizations. The Digital Chamber, which led the lawsuit, reported that state officials will delay the 0.2% tax on digital assets from January 1, 2027, until July 1, 2027.
The digital asset tax was included in the Illinois state budget for fiscal year 2027 and would have required crypto brokers to impose a 0.2% tax or face potential prison time and fines starting on January 1. The Digital Chamber's CEO, Cody Carbone, called the delay a 'major win' but stated that the organization will continue to attempt to overturn the tax in court.
The lawsuit was separate from other legal actions taken by the Crypto Council for Innovation and Blockchain Association against the crypto tax. However, the status of these lawsuits remains unclear following the agreement for a six-month delay.
