IMF Disputes El Salvador's Bitcoin Buying Claims
El Salvador's Bitcoin reserve has grown by over 1,540 BTC in the past year, from approximately 6,224 to more than 7,764 BTC.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) reviewed the country's loan program and found that the recent accumulation of Bitcoin reflected private donations, not new government spending.
According to the IMF, documents provided by El Salvador showed that the increase in Bitcoin holdings since the previous review came from private contributions, with no public resources used.
The IMF also noted that El Salvador's government had 'substantially unwound' its stakes in the Chivo e-wallet, transferring majority ownership and operational control to a private operator while retaining a minority stake and custodial responsibilities for customer assets.
