IRS Warns of Phishing Scams Targeting Crypto Holders as Senator's Account Gets Hacked

Crypto scammers have found a new way to deceive users by exploiting the narrative of regulation. The IRS has issued a warning about fake letters being sent to crypto holders, claiming they are from the tax agency and requiring registration on a lookalike domain.

The letters, which claim to be about 'Digital Asset Compliance', threaten penalties for non-compliance and demand urgent action. They ask users to scan a QR code to register, which actually mines personal information from unsuspecting victims.

In a separate incident, Senator Cynthia Lummis' X account was hacked to promote the Solana meme coin 'USA'. Although the post was quickly flagged as suspicious and removed, it highlights the risks of meme coins being promoted by influential accounts.

The IRS warned users to be cautious of anyone seeking their personal information with a sense of urgency. They also advised keeping keys and wallet recovery phrases secret and reporting any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
