Italian Trade Associations Push for Zero Commission Fees on Digital Euro Micropayments
The main Italian trade associations, Confcommercio, Confesercenti, FIPE, and Netcomm, presented a joint position to the Bank of Italy on September 25. They requested zero commission fees for micropayments and no additional costs for integrating the existing payment terminals.
This request comes as the Vice Director-General Chiara Scotti set other boundaries on the project's architecture that same day. The proposal complements the perspective of those who will have to accept the new digital euro in stores every day.
The trade associations justified their requests by citing a specific data point: 54% of transactions in European Union countries are under €20, making the commission structure particularly relevant for businesses like bars, restaurants, and small shops, where low-value payments represent daily activity.
