Italian authorities have launched a major crackdown on a suspected mafia-linked underground banking operation, arresting 30 individuals accused of laundering illicit funds through cryptocurrencies. The network allegedly transferred approximately €68 million abroad, using a mix of cash from drug trafficking, fraudulent corporate invoices, and conventional bank accounts to facilitate the transfers.
According to Milan prosecutors, the ring converted illicit funds into cryptocurrencies, leveraging digital wallets to obscure the origins of the money. The operation highlights the growing use of cryptocurrencies in organized crime, as they provide a layer of anonymity that traditional banking systems lack.
The investigation, conducted by Italy’s financial police, underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in tracking and preventing financial crimes that exploit digital currencies. The arrests mark a significant step in disrupting transnational criminal networks that rely on crypto assets to move and launder money.
