Japan Expands Sanctions List to Target Crypto Evasion and Shadow Fleet
Japan has expanded its asset-freeze list to include 33 Russia-related military groups and nine individuals, specifically targeting those involved in using crypto assets to evade financial sanctions. The new measures, approved during a Cabinet meeting on October 6, aim to tighten restrictions on entities circumventing Western sanctions through digital currencies.
The sanctions also extend to 35 vessels operating in Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.” These ships are used to secretly transport Russian crude oil, bypassing international trade restrictions. Japan will now prohibit providing services such as operations, repairs, insurance, and financing to these vessels.
This latest move underscores Japan’s commitment to aligning with global efforts to counter Russia’s sanctions evasion strategies. The government’s decision reflects growing concerns over the use of cryptocurrencies in facilitating illicit financial activities.
