Japan Sanctions Garantex, Tightens Noose on Russia's Crypto and Logistics Channels
Japan has expanded its sanctions against Russia by adding cryptocurrency exchange Garantex to an asset-freeze list, tightening restrictions on payments and capital transactions involving designated parties. The move is part of a joint statement from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The updated sanctions package also includes 33 additional organizations and nine individuals linked to Russia, as well as 35 vessels associated with the 'shadow fleet' used to support oil shipments. This is an area that Japan believes is closely tied to Russia's ability to earn revenue from crude exports.
Garantex has been sanctioned by other countries, including the US and EU, for allegedly helping Russian entities bypass financial restrictions. Japan's move builds on earlier restrictions rather than introducing new pressure.
