Japan's Blockchain Settlement System: Bringing Mainstream Finance Closer to Bitcoin
Japan's financial institutions are teaming up to develop a blockchain-based settlement system for stocks and government bonds, aiming to bring mainstream finance closer to the 24/7 world of Bitcoin.
The Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan, and major financial firms will launch a study group this summer to design the system, with a development plan expected by early 2027. The project aims to convert bank reserves into digital tokens on a blockchain, reducing settlement times from several days to real-time.
Japan's three megabanks and securities firms are already piloting tokenized stocks and bonds, and the new system could be operational in the early 2030s. While Bitcoin has traded continuously since its inception, Japanese stocks currently settle two business days after a trade (T+2), while government bonds settle the next business day (T+1).
