Japan's FSA Launches Stablecoin Pilot Project with Major Banks
Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) is backing a pilot project to test the use of stablecoins for settling funds in trade transactions. The agency said that participants include TradeWaltz, NTT Data, Mizuho Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., and Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corp.
The project, which began this month, is the 15th case supported under the FinTech Proof-of-Concept Hub. It marks the fourth case supported under the Payment Innovation Project (PIP), a payments-focused program within the regulator's hub. The goal of the pilot is to verify whether stablecoins can be used for fund settlement in trade transactions and review actual business procedures.
The FSA plans to use the project to closely examine the feasibility of using stablecoins for trade settlement and the related regulatory framework under the Payment Innovation Project (PIP). After the test concludes, the FSA will release the results, including issues identified in regulatory compliance and supervisory responses.
