JPMorgan Doubles Down on Bitcoin, Ethereum Amid Crypto Volatility
JPMorgan Chase & Co., the top American bank, has significantly increased its exposure to Bitcoin and Ethereum in the second quarter of 2026. The bank's latest regulatory filings reveal a total investment of $355.7 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), as well as a 338% increase in its position on the Ethereum ETHA ETF.
The investments remain a modest fraction compared to the bank's entire declared portfolio, estimated at $1,807 billion spread across 34,064 individual lines. However, the growth rate of these crypto holdings far exceeds the average of JPMorgan's traditional equity investments.
The bank's options portfolio structure also shows a notably bullish shift, with call options related to the IBIT fund rising from 3.77 million to 3.94 million contracts over the period. This contrasts sharply with recent capital outflows recorded by spot Bitcoin ETFs and highlights the difference between short-term nervousness and long-term institutional management.
JPMorgan also re-exposed itself to Ripple, investing in two specialized funds and a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) linked to the project. While these amounts remain extremely modest compared to the bank's overall balance sheet, the shift from a full liquidation to a simultaneous subscription on three XRP-related instruments indicates the asset management branch no longer excludes this asset from its diversification strategies.
