JPMorgan: Unwinding Bitcoin ETF Hedges Could Give Crypto Edge Over Gold

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has published an analysis suggesting that unwinding hedging positions in Bitcoin ETFs could give Bitcoin an edge over gold. The report, led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, notes that investors have built up unusually heavy hedging activity surrounding spot Bitcoin ETFs, particularly BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).

According to the analysis, the divergent recovery in gold and Bitcoin ETF demand has created a potential opportunity for Bitcoin. While gold ETFs have fully replenished their capital lost earlier this year, Bitcoin ETFs have only clawed back about half of their prior outflows.

JPMorgan interprets this divergence as a sign that there is more room for a rebound in Bitcoin if the news cycle turns favorable. The bank notes that futures positioning in both Bitcoin and gold remains elevated, indicating that institutional investors have not abandoned either trade.

However, the analysis also highlights that short interest in IBIT is hovering near its highest level of the year, while short interest in the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) sits below its historical average. This suggests that Bitcoin still faces a more skeptical positioning backdrop than gold.
