JPYC Stablecoin Expands into Japanese Logistics Industry
AZ-COM Maruwa Holdings, a Japanese logistics company and delivery provider for Amazon Japan, is set to pay around 2,300 contractors and truck drivers in JPYC, the first official stablecoin pegged to the yen. This move marks a significant expansion of business use cases for stablecoins, which are designed to maintain a stable value relative to traditional currencies.
The company plans to invest approximately ¥1 billion ($6.1 million) to acquire a 2.9% stake in JPYC and build a dedicated payment infrastructure that will allow the token to be used to pay fees to partner companies and workers. This partnership aims to speed up cash flow to drivers and small transport operators, who will receive near-instant and fee-free conversions into yen.
The operational motivation behind this move comes from everyday logistics challenges in Japan, including labour shortages, an ageing workforce, and stricter overtime rules. Maruwa expects that using JPYC will make contract work more attractive for its contractors by reducing the time it takes to receive payment.
