Billionaire hedge fund investor Ken Griffin has warned that the AI economy may be overheating, potentially leading to a significant market correction. Speaking at Citadel's Future of Global Markets Conference in New York, Griffin stated that AI is "almost certainly" in a bubble. While he remains optimistic about the long-term prospects of companies that survive the shakeout, he noted that current stock valuations struggle to reflect the uncertainty of who will emerge as winners and losers.
For crypto investors, Griffin's warning presents several potential strategies. One approach is to pivot from AI stocks to safer, well-established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC). Bitcoin has recently surged back to $80,000 from a summer low of $60,000, attracting capital from AI-focused investments. Griffin also highlighted the growing intersection of AI and blockchain technology, suggesting that investors could explore opportunities in this space.
One such opportunity could be NEAR Protocol (NEAR), a Layer 1 blockchain network optimized for agentic AI. NEAR has seen a nearly 180% increase this year, driven by the hype around AI agents. However, Griffin cautioned against investing in cryptocurrencies or stocks that are pivoting to AI as a last-minute strategy, as these could be wiped out if the AI bubble bursts.
The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team has not included NEAR Protocol in their list of top 10 stocks for investors, despite the potential of AI and blockchain synergies. The team's past recommendations, such as Netflix and Nvidia, have yielded significant returns, underscoring the importance of long-term, buy-and-hold investments that can weather market volatility.
