Korean Workers Cash In On AI Chip Boom as Crypto Investors Take Notice
The AI chip boom in South Korea has transformed the country's economy and job market. Semiconductor workers are now highly sought after, with lucrative compensation packages that rival those of doctors. The two largest companies driving this trend are Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which are investing $518 billion to construct new chip fabrication facilities and upgrade existing infrastructure.
The demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips has surged due to the need for training and running AI models. As a result, SK Hynix workers can expect average bonuses of around $477,000 in 2026, potentially increasing to $900,000 in 2027. This is a significant amount, considering that the average annual salary in South Korea hovers around $42,000.
Many high school graduates are now choosing direct employment at Samsung over attending college, opting for semiconductor careers instead of traditional professional tracks like medicine or law. The KOSPI index has seen significant gains from 2025 to 2026, with Samsung and SK Hynix responsible for up to 70% of these increases.
Korean retail traders have been migrating capital out of digital assets and into semiconductor stocks, contributing to declining liquidity on South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges. This shift in investor behavior has important implications for crypto investors, as a generation of Korean investors now have a compelling domestic alternative that offers exposure to AI's growth story without the regulatory uncertainty surrounding crypto markets.
