KuCoin's Altcoin Empire Built on Shaky Regulatory Grounds
KuCoin is one of the largest global cryptocurrency exchanges by user count, founded in 2017 and operating across Seychelles, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands. It claims to serve over 45 million users and lists more than 1,000 altcoins alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The exchange's core pitch remains the same: giving traders early access to smaller-cap tokens before they reach bigger exchanges. KuCoin offers various products under one account, including spot trading, margin trading, futures contracts, a trading bot marketplace with preset grid and DCA strategies, staking and yield products for idle holdings (KuCoin Earn), P2P trading, and spending crypto-linked balances.
However, the platform's regulatory status is complex. In January 2025, KuCoin's operator pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business in the United States, resulting in a $297 million settlement. A US federal court later approved a consent order permanently barring Peken Global from serving US users unless it registers as a foreign board of trade.
The exchange still operates in some EU countries but faces licensing issues there as well. Users should verify their jurisdiction's rules before depositing funds, as regulatory exposure and lack of deposit insurance or regulator backstop pose significant risks.
