Latin America's Cryptocurrency Money Laundering Epidemic Spreads
Cryptocurrencies have become a popular tool for organized crime groups in Latin America to move funds globally through complex digital financial architectures, making it difficult for authorities to trace illicit money.
The use of cryptocurrencies in money laundering has evolved beyond just hiding illicit proceeds, with criminal organizations now investing in technologies that generate income and strengthen their financial independence.
Financial ecosystems, including digital financial institutions, OTC cryptocurrency brokers, and cryptocurrency exchanges, are being exploited by criminal organizations to move funds rapidly across borders.
According to Álvaro Marques, a former Brazilian Federal Police agent, the use of cryptocurrencies has created additional challenges for authorities when trying to trace financial assets, as the technical origin of the funds can be associated with a legitimate activity.
Caio Motta, senior Solutions Architect for Latin America at Chainalysis, stated that criminal organizations are seeking greater efficiency and that the ability to move capital without relying on cash and with a lower risk of interception is extremely attractive.
Investigations have shown that this model is widespread across the region, with cases such as Operation Hidden Flow in Brazil and Operation Gulupa in Colombia revealing the use of cryptocurrency exchanges and shell companies for money laundering.
