LayerZero Brings Institutional Crypto Trading to the Blockchain with ATLAS
LayerZero Labs has launched ATLAS, a blockchain-based exchange designed specifically for financial institutions. The company partnered with Citadel Securities and DTCC to bring this ambitious project to life.
Unlike consumer-facing exchanges like Coinbase or Binance, ATLAS is a backend infrastructure play that will provide brokers, trading platforms, and regulated financial entities with access to digital asset liquidity. At launch, the platform will support spot digital asset token trading and perpetual futures, with prediction contracts, traditional futures, and options trading to follow in subsequent phases.
ATLAS runs on Zero, a new heterogeneous Layer 1 blockchain built by LayerZero that claims throughput of approximately 2 million transactions per second. This is an extraordinary number, dwarfing most existing blockchains, including Solana's theoretical maximum of around 65,000 TPS.
The involvement of Citadel Securities and DTCC is significant, as they are testing whether Zero's architecture can handle post-trade processes currently running on decades-old infrastructure. Citadel Securities has also made a strategic investment in LayerZero's native ZRO token, suggesting the firm sees it as integral to the network's functioning.
