Litecoin Surges as Bitcoin and Other Cryptos Fall Amid Rising Treasury Yields
The cryptocurrency market saw a divergence in performance yesterday as Litecoin rose by 6% while Bitcoin and many other major cryptocurrencies declined.
Litecoin's price gained 6.2% over the past 24 hours, reaching $66.89 according to data from CoinDesk. Meanwhile, Bitcoin fell by 3% during the same period. Litecoin's gain since the start of the UTC day was even more significant at 8.1%, surpassing its 24-hour return.
The increase in Litecoin's price was accompanied by a surge in open interest in futures contracts, reaching 8.96 million LTC on January 18. This marked the highest level since September 19 and indicated that new long positions were being taken as well as short covering.
In contrast, Bitcoin futures saw a decline in dollar-denominated open interest of 6% over 24 hours, with the price falling by 3%. This suggested that existing contracts were not merely losing value but also being closed, consistent with long positions being unwound rather than new bearish positions accumulating.
