MakerDAO Rebrands as Sky with New Stablecoin and Governance Token
MakerDAO has rebranded as Sky and introduced several upgrades to its decentralized finance (DeFi) platform. The new ecosystem includes a rebranded Dai stablecoin, now called USDS, and a governance token previously known as MKR, which is now SKY.
The co-founder of MakerDAO, Rune Christensen, describes this transformation as the 'next evolution of DeFi.' He highlights Sky's focus on simplicity and usability, with features like Sky Token Rewards (STRs) and the Sky Savings Rate (SSR) being made accessible to users in eligible jurisdictions.
As part of the rebranding, MakerDAO's SubDAOs will now be known as Sky Stars. These independent projects will continue to operate within the Sky ecosystem with their own unique business models and autonomy. The first Sky Star to go live is Spark, an open-source decentralized liquidity protocol offering a 6% yield for users depositing DAI tokens.
The transition involves a significant change in token distribution, where MKR will be upgraded to SKY at a 1:24,000 ratio, which Christensen believes will democratize access to the ecosystem. The larger supply of SKY aims to attract a broader base of users and make it easier for them to participate.
