Market Hours Expand: Weekend Trading Goes Mainstream
The traditional weekend pause in trading is slowly disappearing as companies push for more flexible market hours.
Three recent developments signal this shift. Coinbase won US approval for its clearing house, built around the USDC stablecoin and settlement that runs around the clock. Robinhood announced plans to let customers trade selected US stocks every day of the week, including weekends. HSBC gave its upcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin a name: RedCoin.
These companies tackle different constraints on weekend and around-the-clock finance. They show trading access, clearing, and digital money being rebuilt around fewer closing hours.
The bigger challenge is liquidity: getting enough buyers and sellers to show up on a Sunday for weekend prices to be as dependable as weekday ones.
