Mastercard Launches Stablecoin Security to Combat Fraud and Scams

Mastercard has introduced Stablecoin Security, a new risk-intelligence tool designed to help financial institutions detect fraud, scams, and sanctions exposure in stablecoin payments. The tool assesses risk throughout a transaction's lifecycle, from initiation to settlement on a public ledger, and generates a risk score before the payment is finalized. This solution is delivered via a platform-agnostic API and was launched in collaboration with partners Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, both graduates of Mastercard's Start Path blockchain accelerator.

The launch addresses a critical gap highlighted by a Bank for International Settlements study, which found that nearly 60% of 2025 stablecoin transfers involved complex, multi-step transactions. These transactions make it challenging for institutions to evaluate risk effectively. Stablecoin Security analyzes factors such as the origin of funds, exposure to restricted parties, and scam indicators, integrating seamlessly into existing compliance and fraud workflows.

Mastercard's executive vice president of security solutions, Ann Johnson, emphasized the importance of the tool in enabling financial institutions to participate in stablecoin transactions with confidence. The company has been increasingly integrating stablecoins into its core business, including the recent rollout of a Global Money Platform with BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure firm it acquired in August. Additionally, Mastercard has expanded stablecoin settlement to include Circle’s USDC and Ripple’s RLUSD.

Stablecoin Security is launching first in North America, with global availability expected in 2027. The tool builds on Mastercard's existing fraud-fighting capabilities, such as Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure, and is part of the company's broader strategy to extend its fraud prevention expertise into the digital asset space.
