Mastercard's Open USD Stablecoin Seeks to Close Infrastructure Gap
Mastercard has expanded its stablecoin offerings by launching Open USD (OUSD), a bank-grade stablecoin, in collaboration with BVNK Finance. This move aims to bridge the gap between existing infrastructure and new value transfer options.
The OUSD stablecoin is issued by Bridge, Stripe's stablecoin arm, with assets backed by BlackRock, Lead Bank, and BNY Mellon, ensuring a 1:1 ratio with the US dollar without mint/burn fees. The initiative involves five equal partners - Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa - committing $200 million of liquidity each.
With OUSD now live on multiple blockchains, including Base, Ethereum, Solana, and Tempo, it offers a regulated choice with minimal distribution friction for investors and institutions. The stablecoin market capitalization reached $280 billion in Q4 2026, indicating significant potential for growth.
