Matador Slashes Costs and Sharpens Bitcoin Treasury Strategy
Matador Technologies Inc. has streamlined its operations, reducing monthly cash operating expenditures by 72% compared to the previous fiscal year. The company now averages about CA$125,000 in monthly expenses, down from CA$445,000, with a target of CA$100,000. CEO Donato Sferra emphasized the company's shift to becoming the leanest in the digital asset treasury space, citing completed financing tools and a focus on operational efficiency.
Matador holds approximately 168 Bitcoin, with 138 pledged as collateral under its US$100 million secured convertible note facility. The company has issued US$10.5 million in notes, funding the purchase of 92 Bitcoin, and plans to draw the remaining US$89.5 million subject to regulatory approvals. Additionally, a CA$30 million at-the-market (ATM) program has raised about CA$2.23 million since February, with 10% of net proceeds used to buy Bitcoin as added collateral.
Shareholders will vote on October 14 to approve the creation of preferred shares, a structure used by larger Bitcoin treasury companies. While Matador has no immediate plans to issue preferred shares, the option remains available. The company also runs a covered-call yield strategy with Galaxy Digital and plans to license its gold tokenization technology to GODL, a gold treasury company.
Matador cautions that its use of leverage can magnify both gains and losses as the price of Bitcoin fluctuates. The company's strategic focus aims to outperform Bitcoin's appreciation in a rising market through its lean structure and yield-generating strategies.
