MediaMarktSaturn, the parent company of European electronics retailer MediaMarkt, has removed all Ledger products from its stores and online platforms following reports of tampered hardware wallets. A spokesperson confirmed the move to Cointelegraph, stating that the company is in contact with Ledger and takes the incident very seriously.
An X user named Johannes claimed that he purchased two Ledger wallets from separate MediaMarkt stores, both of which contained unauthorized cables and cellular modules. The security concerns first emerged after Ledger announced it was investigating reports of losses involving devices sold through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis.
Ledger confirmed on Tuesday that implants in some devices transmitted users’ recovery phrases over cellular networks. The company is also looking into reports beyond CryptoBilis. Meanwhile, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès reported that a Ledger Flex purchased at Singapore’s airport contained a spy implant, though Ledger did not directly address this case.
Cointelegraph reached out to Ledger for comment on whether any tampered devices had been confirmed in Europe but did not receive a response by publication time.
