MediaMarktSaturn, the parent company of the European electronics retailer MediaMarkt, has removed all Ledger products from its stores and online platforms following reports of tampered hardware wallets. A spokesperson for the company confirmed the action, stating that they are in contact with Ledger and take the incident very seriously.
An X user named Johannes claimed that he purchased two Ledger wallets from separate MediaMarkt stores, both of which contained unauthorized cables and cellular modules. This security concern emerged after Ledger announced it was investigating reports of losses involving devices sold through the Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis.
Ledger confirmed on Tuesday that implants in some devices transmitted users’ recovery phrases over cellular networks. The company is also investigating reports beyond the CryptoBilis case. Separately, former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès reported that a Ledger Flex purchased at Singapore’s airport contained a spy implant. Ledger did not directly address the Singapore case but referred users to its latest CryptoBilis investigation update.
Cointelegraph reached out to Ledger for confirmation on any tampered devices in Europe but did not receive a response by publication time.
