Meme Coin Market Slips Amid Bitcoin Volatility and Token Unlocks
The meme coin market saw significant fluctuations on October 7, with most categories experiencing declines. According to DexScreener, 17 out of 18 meme coin categories lost market capitalization over the past 24 hours, except for political memes, which rose by 1.05% to $5.96 billion. Notable declines were seen in dogs (-4.86%), degen tokens (-7.55%), and brainrot (-8.75%), while cats slipped just 1.38%. Solana continued to lead in trading volume with $3.17 billion, followed by BNB Chain at $1.97 billion, Base at $1.10 billion, and Robinhood Chain at $934.6 million.
Despite Bitcoin trading near $86,300, CoinGecko's Fear and Greed Index remained in the fear zone at 40, indicating risk-off tendencies. Global 24-hour trading volume fell to $80.3 billion from $130.6 billion a week ago. Among the top meme coin market winners, Cao Zhen (CZ) on BNB Chain surged roughly 9,178% with a $659,000 market cap, while Team Human (HUMAN) on Solana rose 1,809% with $22.8 million in volume. Other gainers included Yersinia pestis (PLAGUE) and cat wif sword (swordcat).
Several meme coins are experimenting with unique trading pairs, such as Anonymous Cat (ZCAT) on Solana, which trades against Zcash (ZEC) instead of SOL. ZCAT's 3% transfer tax is converted into ZEC and distributed to wallets holding at least $20 of the token. However, ZEC's recent 16.7% decline poses a risk to these payouts. Other notable launches include Meme Agency (MEMEAGENCY) on Pump.fun and Cao Zhen (CZ) on BNB Chain, which topped the trending board with a 9,178% surge.
The largest meme coin losers included Agent Cat (AGENTCAT) on Solana, which crashed 89.1% despite generating $10.4 million in volume. Other significant decliners were Binance Inu (BI) on BNB Chain (-84.6%), Knight Cat (-80.0%), and Superintelligence Owl (OWL) (-74.6%). The market faces two major tests: Bitcoin's ability to sustain its rally and the impact of upcoming token unlocks, particularly on political meme tokens.
