MetaMask Abandons Lido Validators After Infrastructure Compromise
MetaMask Staking has begun exiting its validators from Lido, the largest liquid staking protocol, following an infrastructure compromise. The move is considered precautionary, and MetaMask has assured users that no wallets or customer funds have been affected. The exit process is expected to take up to 45 days, during which time stETH holders will miss out on rewards and may face downtime penalties.
Lido has a diverse set of node operators, which is meant to absorb the loss of one operator. However, the network's design also imposes limits on how much ETH can be staked and withdrawn at a time, which affects stETH holders.
This development comes amidst a wave of security incidents in the crypto space, with CertiK reporting $766.4 million in September exploit and phishing losses. Other notable incidents include a $387.5 million hot-wallet breach at Bitget and a $3.8 million loss at NEAR Intents.
