MetaMask Pauses Validators Amid Ongoing Security Investigation
MetaMask has paused some of its Ethereum staking validators as part of an ongoing security investigation. The company has not disclosed specific details about the issue, but says it's working with external security partners and advisors to address the problem. MetaMask notes that there is no immediate threat to users' wallets, but the move could affect staking rewards in the short term.
The affected validators are being removed from Lido, a non-custodial staking service, as part of the precautionary measures. The exit process for the validators is expected to be completed by October 7, 2026. During this time, ETH will not return to staking immediately and users may need to go through a withdrawal process before staking again.
Lido has confirmed that MetaMask Staking has started exiting some of its Ethereum validators from the protocol. The company notes that no action is required from stETH holders, but ETH exited from MetaMask Staking-operated validators is expected to return to the protocol gradually as the relevant validators complete the exit, withdrawal, and re-entry cycle.
A separate development saw a wallet linked to Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin move about 133,298 ETH, worth around $356.2 million, to a newly created wallet. However, there is no indication that this transfer is connected to the MetaMask security incident.
