Metaplanet Shares Rise as Company Expands Investment Strategy Beyond Bitcoin
Metaplanet (MTPLF) shares rose 2.42% to close at $1.86 in U.S. OTC trading after the company revised its asset allocation rules. The firm now plans to invest up to 15% of its assets outside Bitcoin (BTC-USD), shifting from its previous strategy of directing nearly all raised capital into Bitcoin since April 2024. Under the new framework, 85% to 90% of assets will remain in Bitcoin.
CEO Simon Gerovich stated that Bitcoin was never the sole focus, outlining plans to use the new 15% asset allocation for corporate takeovers and income-generating financial products. The remaining portion will support a new investment business aimed at raising cash for further Bitcoin purchases.
As part of its takeover strategy, Metaplanet agreed to transfer 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash to Super League Enterprise (SLE), a Nasdaq-listed media firm. Pending regulatory approvals, Metaplanet expects to take control of the business and rename it Superplanet.
The firm is also launching a Net Interest Income Strategy, which will raise capital and invest in assets offering higher returns than borrowing costs. Net profits from this strategy will be used to buy more Bitcoin, though returns are not guaranteed.
Metaplanet faces limits on selling new common shares due to its market capitalization being below the value of its crypto holdings. At a Bitcoin price near $85,516, its 44,000 BTC holdings are worth roughly $3.76 billion, while its total shares carry a market value of about $2.1 billion.
