Metaplanet Shifts Strategy to Fund Bitcoin Buys with Interest Income
Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company, is adjusting its balance sheet to generate interest income that will help fund future bitcoin purchases. In a filing with the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Monday, the firm outlined plans to maintain bitcoin at 85%-90% of its total assets while allocating 10%-15% to a new "net interest income" initiative. This strategy involves raising funds through various sources, investing in securities that yield steady returns, and profiting from the difference between those yields and the cost of financing.
The primary focus of this initiative is preferred securities issued by "bitcoin treasury companies," which are firms with large bitcoin holdings. The goal is to use the income from these securities to cover dividends or interest obligations, ultimately reducing the company's overall funding burden. However, this approach introduces a new layer of complexity, as the success of the strategy now depends on both the cost of borrowing and investor appetite for credit risk.
For markets, Metaplanet's new income sleeve makes it more sensitive to interest rates and risk sentiment. The company's shares could now react not only to bitcoin's price but also to credit conditions that typically affect banks and high-yield borrowers. If interest rates rise or lenders demand higher risk premiums, Metaplanet's financing costs could outpace its income, squeezing the margin it relies on. Additionally, preferred securities may fall in price when yields climb or markets turn cautious, potentially reducing the value of the "steady income" bucket.
