Mexico Cracks Down on Illicit Crypto Mining Operation Tapping Hydroelectric Grid

Mexican authorities have dismantled an illegal cryptocurrency mining farm in Tlaola, Puebla's northern highlands. The operation was found to be tapping into the federal hydroelectric plant's infrastructure, allegedly stealing electricity for over a year.

The raid resulted in the seizure of approximately 300 specialized computers used for cryptocurrency mining, along with transformers, medium-voltage equipment, and satellite internet antennas. Authorities noted that this level of equipment requires massive power consumption, contributing to the investigation and subsequent discovery.

Investigations are now underway to determine whether similar operations exist in neighboring municipalities and nearby states. The authorities emphasized concerns over the scale of electricity theft, citing the significant noise and energy demands associated with crypto mining, which often pushes operators toward remote or secluded locations.
