MiCA Boosts Trust in Regulated Crypto Platforms, But Stricter Enforcement Needed
The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework has led to a significant increase in trust among European crypto users in regulated platforms, according to Bitpanda co-CEO Christian Trummer. The MiCA framework, which came into effect in the EU, has created a more level playing field for regulated firms, giving them a competitive edge over unlicensed providers. Trummer noted that most users have 'more faith' in regulated market participants after the rules came into force, contrasting this with the 'Crypto Twitter' bubble centered on self-custody solutions.
Trummer emphasized the importance of stricter enforcement of MiCA, stating that some companies continue to offer services to European customers without complying with the licensing regime. This leaves regulated firms at a disadvantage in the market, he argued. The grandfathering period for existing crypto service providers ends on July 1, and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is pushing for stronger supervisory powers to address unauthorized firms.
ESMA has called for more powers to act against unauthorized services and ensure regulatory compliance. The move highlights the growing pressure on regulators to crack down on firms still serving EU clients without authorization. Trummer's comments underscore the need for more robust enforcement of MiCA, which is critical to maintaining a fair competitive environment in the European crypto market.
