MiCA Regulation Forces Italian Crypto Exchanges to Adapt to Systematic Trading Requirements

Choosing the best crypto exchange in Italy for systematic trading has become increasingly complex due to strict regulations and varying requirements. A simple interface, low costs, and the ability to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum with a bank transfer in euros may be sufficient for an occasional investor.

However, for a systematic trader, there are several key factors to consider when selecting an exchange. These include European regulation, integration with trading platforms, API quality and execution, availability of long and short instruments (spot and Futures), fee structure, and the quality and depth of historical data available.

The implementation of the MiCA regulation has added another layer of complexity. On July 1, 2026, the transitional period provided by the European MiCA regulation ended, requiring Crypto-Asset Service Providers to have the relevant authorization to provide services to EU clients.

When evaluating exchanges for systematic trading, traders must consider whether the platform can be reliably integrated within their trading infrastructure. Software like MultiCharts makes it possible to develop strategies in PowerLanguage, perform backtests, optimizations, and automate order submission. A stable connection to the exchange is crucial for automated environments.

A key advantage of OKX Europe is its balance between regulation, technology, and costs. It has MiCA authorization issued by the Malta Financial Services Authority and can offer services in the EEA through European passporting. OKX also offers separate structures regulated under MiFID for derivatives, including X-Perps, which are long-dated futures that allow for long and short positions, leverage up to 10x, and trading via API.

Kraken is another competitor with a strong reputation and solidity. It has both MiCA authorization through the Central Bank of Ireland and a MiFID structure for offering derivatives in the EEA. However, its spot fees are higher compared to OKX, especially for smaller volumes.
