MiCA Regulatory Framework Exposes European Crypto Investors to Widespread Scams

The MiCA regulatory framework in the European Union, intended to increase transparency and protect investors on cryptocurrency markets, has led to unforeseen consequences. Following the closure of the transitional period on July 1, numerous unlicensed platforms were forced to shut down, leaving millions of euros stranded with their users.

Scammers have taken advantage of this situation, posing as high-level European financial regulators and convincing investors to transfer their assets to fake websites. This has resulted in a surge in identity theft scams, with the Chainalysis data showing that these types of attacks are becoming increasingly common in the cryptocurrency space.

The French AMF's director general, Stéphane Pontoizeau, warned that scammers exploit the sense of urgency created by regulatory pressure. The AMF deliberately avoided aggressive shutdown deadlines to give investors enough time for a thoughtful decision. Investors should exercise extreme caution when responding to any transfer requests and only verify information through official channels.
