Michael Saylor, the co-founder and executive chairman of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), has set a bold price target for Bitcoin (BTC), predicting it will surpass $100,000 over the next 12 months. At the time of writing on October 26, 2026, Bitcoin is trading at approximately $80,000, which means it would need to gain about 25% to reach Saylor's target. While this is a significant jump, it aligns with Bitcoin's history of substantial price swings.
Saylor's prediction is rooted in Bitcoin's four-year price cycles. Historically, Bitcoin has peaked roughly every four years, with the bottoms of bear markets occurring about a year after the peaks. For instance, Bitcoin peaked at nearly $69,000 in November 2021 and bottomed out at around $15,500 in November 2022. If this cycle holds, 2026 could mark the bottom of the current bear market, setting the stage for a strong 2027. Past performance shows that Bitcoin has gained significantly in the years following a bottom, such as a 155.4% increase in 2023 and a 92.2% gain in 2019.
However, there are potential risks that could hinder Bitcoin's momentum. The macroeconomic environment, particularly rising interest rates and economic uncertainty, could dampen investor enthusiasm. Higher rates make yield-generating assets like U.S. Treasury bonds more attractive, potentially drawing investment away from Bitcoin. Additionally, the crypto market's recent rally might not yet signal a definitive bottom, leaving room for further volatility.
Despite these risks, Saylor's prediction of Bitcoin reaching $100,000 within a year is considered reasonable. He has also made a more ambitious long-term forecast, suggesting Bitcoin could hit $13 million by 2045. Given Bitcoin's volatility, investors are advised to maintain a small position relative to their total portfolio and plan to hold for at least five years.
