Microsoft's X Account Hacked to Promote Cryptocurrency Token

Microsoft's official X account was compromised in a hack that appeared to promote a cryptocurrency token. The account, which has since been suspended, followed another account and reposted a message asking how many likes would be needed to bring back Clippy, the iconic paperclip assistant.

Clippy has a long history of being referenced and playfully teased by Microsoft over the years, often to ironic or nostalgic effect. However, this time around, the context was far from lighthearted. The hack was used to promote a cryptocurrency token, and Microsoft has since apologized for the post, stating that it does not endorse cryptocurrency.

Microsoft deleted its post on the situation, but The Verge captured a screenshot of it before it was removed. The post concluded with a somewhat ironic piece of advice to 'rely only on Microsoft's official channels for information regarding our brands, products, securities, and intellectual properties.'
