Microsoft's X Account Hijacked by Crypto Scammers in Clippy-themed Heist
Crypto scammers have struck again, hijacking Microsoft's official X account on Thursday. The attackers used the account to amplify a Clippy-themed cryptocurrency account, @clippymsftcto, which posed as the iconic paperclip assistant from older versions of Office. The compromised account has over 13 million followers, and the scammers took advantage of this to spread their message. Microsoft's profile picture was replaced with a Clippy image, and the account shared a message from the crypto account, which was pushing a $Clippy token.
The attackers also claimed that the token's liquidity pool was paired with $MSFT, Microsoft's stock ticker. However, the posts were eventually taken down, and a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the account had been secured. The company is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the breach.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of even high-profile accounts to hacking, and the ease with which scammers can use these platforms to spread their messages. While Microsoft has not disclosed how the attackers gained access to its account, the company has emphasized that it does not support or endorse any cryptocurrency or crypto-related token.
