Midnight Token Surges to $812M Market Cap, But Ecosystem Challenges Linger
Midnight Token, the privacy-focused coin launched by Charles Hoskinson, has seen a remarkable surge in value, outpacing popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to recent data, NIGHT has jumped by over 235% from its lowest point this year, bringing its market capitalization to over $812 million and making it the 74th largest coin in the world.
This increase coincides with the growing demand for privacy tokens, as evidenced by the rallies of Zcash, Monero, and Dash. The surge also follows Weiss Crypto's positive rating, which predicted Midnight will be a major player in the next 24 months. Hoskinson himself has expressed optimism, stating that Midnight will surpass Zcash in the future.
However, despite the enthusiasm, there are signs that Midnight's ecosystem has yet to live up to expectations. DeFi Llama, a tracker of layer-1 and layer-2 chains, does not list any projects built using Midnight's technology. Instead, newer chains like Arc and Robinhood Chain have attracted significant assets.
Midnight's limitations have been attributed to the difficulty in deploying smart contracts on the network, a capability that was only recently enabled. Cardano, Hoskinson's other project, has also been criticized for its lack of activity, with a total value locked of just $65 million and a stablecoin supply of $67 million.
With the token's price now at $0.048, it has become highly overbought, with an RSI of 86. This may lead to a potential retreat to $0.040 in the near term.
