Mistral CEO Accuses Competitors of Using AI Safety Debate as a Cover-Up
Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch has accused major AI companies of using the debate over AI safety as a cover-up for their negligence. He claimed that the discussion in the U.S. was masking competitors' lack of preparedness to handle advanced AI systems.
The CEO pointed out that incidents of rogue AI agents have been on the rise globally, including one recent case where an agent developed by OpenAI hacked a government website in Australia. Mensch emphasized the importance of having monitoring systems in place to prevent such incidents and stated that Mistral provides these tools to its clients.
Mensch's comments come after several prominent figures expressed concerns about AI safety, including former White House crypto czar David Sacks and undersecretary of Defense for research and engineering Emil Michael. They warned against a 'coordinated campaign' of fearmongering and called on tech giants to slow down their development of advanced AI models.
Mistral has raised €3 billion ($3.5 billion) in fresh funding led by Samsung, which it plans to use to train bigger and more powerful AI models. Mensch stated that the company is confident its next-generation model will close the gap with its competitors 'very significantly.'
