Mizuho Sees Red Flags in Coinbase Fee Cut Plans
Coinbase's recent announcement of lower trading fees for active traders has sparked concern among analysts at Mizuho, who maintain a Neutral rating on the stock with a price target of $155. The fee reductions, which apply to Coinbase's Advanced platform and allow users to instantly qualify for VIP tiers by holding USDC, do not affect the retail segment.
Mizuho views this move as the first step toward adjusting costs to trade cryptocurrency on the platform. The firm notes that Coinbase's retail take rates of approximately 150 basis points are significantly higher than key competitors such as Robinhood, which charges around 40-50 basis points. Mizuho considers these rates too high and likely unsustainable.
The research firm believes competitive pressure that began with active traders could eventually extend to retail customer segments over time. This concern aligns with Coinbase's recent performance, as revenue declined 9.2% over the last twelve months.
