Nasdaq Puts $100 Million into Tokenized Stocks With Payward Investment
Nasdaq's investment arm has made a significant move in the world of tokenized stocks by investing $100 million in Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken. This partnership builds on Nasdaq's existing work on its Nasdaq Equity Token framework, which aims to bring high-trust and high-reliability tokenized stock trading to the market.
The goal is for Nasdaq and Payward to launch their system in the second quarter of 2027, which would allow investors to hold direct ownership and rights to stocks on a blockchain. This technology has been gaining traction in recent years, but it's still relatively new and untested.
Nasdaq emphasized that its goal is to create a platform that 'helps build a more connected financial system while preserving the trust, transparency and integrity that underpin capital formation.' The partnership with Payward is seen as a significant step towards achieving this goal, but it's also worth noting that there are still many challenges and uncertainties surrounding tokenized stocks.
