Nigeria's Crypto Market Booms Despite Initial Restrictions

Share

Nigeria's cryptocurrency market has experienced significant growth in recent years, despite initial restrictions from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and concerns about regulatory oversight.

In 2021, the CBN instructed banks to close accounts related to cryptocurrency transactions, citing risks such as money laundering and terrorism financing. However, this move did not deter Nigerians from using cryptocurrencies, with many turning to peer-to-peer trading and international platforms to buy and sell digital assets.

The emergence of local exchanges and fintech companies has played a crucial role in the growth of Nigeria's crypto market. Quidax, founded by Buchi Okoro, was among the first companies to receive a provisional Digital Assets Exchange license from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in August 2024.

The Nigerian government has since lifted restrictions on banks dealing with virtual-asset service providers, replacing them with guidelines for licensed or regulated operators. This move has helped bring cryptocurrency activity closer to the formal financial system.
