North Dakota's Roughrider Coin Launches on Solana Blockchain for Financial Institutions
The Bank of North Dakota's Roughrider Coin is now live on the Solana blockchain, according to a Fiserv announcement on October 1. The Roughrider Coin is a dollar-backed stablecoin designed for financial institutions, with more than 90 banks and credit unions able to access the system.
The coin is issued by VersaBank USA National Association, an OCC-chartered U.S. bank, and managed by Fiserv's digital asset platform. The platform also provides secured wallet and tokenization infrastructure through Fireblocks.
The Roughrider Coin is not a retail investment opportunity, but rather a tool for financial institutions to conduct bank-to-bank transactions. The coin's value is tied to U.S. dollars, with each token representing a one-to-one backing in dollars. The autoburn design ensures that the fiat settlement and reconciliation record is as important as the on-chain transfer.
When a token is transferred, it triggers a burn instruction that initiates the off-chain leg of the transaction. This process reduces the circulating token supply and does not, by itself, deposit spendable dollars in a receiving bank's account. The relevant audit trail joins mint confirmation, transfer, burn, reserve debit, receiving credit, and any exception.
The Bank of North Dakota provides governance oversight, while Fiserv runs the platform and the Commercial Center interface used by participating institutions. Fireblocks provides secured wallet and tokenization infrastructure. Solana processes the on-chain transaction.
