NYSE Unveils Plans for 24/7 Tokenized Trading Platform
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is set to launch a dedicated platform for trading and settling tokenized US equities and ETFs, with around-the-clock operations. This new system will operate alongside the traditional NYSE, combining the exchange's existing Pillar matching engine with blockchain-based post-trade infrastructure.
The platform will allow trades to settle near-instantly, unlike the current T+1 timeline. Trades can happen 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and orders will be denominated in dollars. The system will also support fractional shares, enabling investors to buy smaller portions of stocks.
ICE has partnered with BNY and Citi to handle tokenized deposit services and clearing. The NYSE's approach is distinct from other exchanges, which are extending trading hours but still relying on conventional clearing. By building on blockchain infrastructure, the NYSE's platform will integrate instant settlement directly into its architecture.
The launch of this platform is part of ICE's broader digital strategy, which includes upgrading its clearing infrastructure to support continuous market operations. Regulatory approval remains a critical variable for the platform's more ambitious features, including stablecoin funding and fractional shares.
