OKX Secures Strategic Backing to Expand Stablecoin Financial Services
OKX, the global cryptocurrency exchange, has secured strategic investments from Circle, Ripple, Qube Research & Technologies (QRT), and SC Ventures by Standard Chartered. The funding round values the company at $25 billion pre-money, matching its March valuation when Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) led a $200 million investment. OKX's CEO, Star Xu, emphasized that the new investors were chosen for their strategic alignment rather than a need for additional capital, highlighting the company's long-term ambitions in stablecoins, payments, and financial infrastructure.
The investor lineup strengthens OKX's ties to key players in the crypto ecosystem. Circle, the issuer of USDC, Ripple, known for its RLUSD stablecoin, QRT, a major institutional liquidity provider, and Standard Chartered, which acts as custodian for BlackRock's BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund, all bring complementary expertise to OKX's platform. Ripple and Circle have existing relationships with OKX, with Ripple noting the potential for deeper cooperation across stablecoins, payments, and institutional markets.
OKX has launched OKX Money, a standalone app designed to facilitate saving, sending, and spending dollar-backed stablecoins. The app supports USDG, USDC, and USDT, offers global transfers, and provides virtual or physical cards with no foreign-exchange fees. Users can earn up to 10% annually on qualifying USDG balances and up to 10% cashback on eligible card purchases. OKX aims to attract users who have never used crypto applications, focusing on markets where currency volatility and banking access pose challenges.
The expansion into consumer payments positions OKX in a competitive arena alongside stablecoin providers and fintech companies. The challenge for OKX and its new investors is to convert their infrastructure advantage and existing customer network into everyday financial activity. Success will depend on OKX's ability to meet the needs of users beyond traditional crypto trading, requiring different distribution, compliance, and customer-support capabilities.
